train to be a model, or just look like one
train to be a model, or just look like one

I can still remember how there was something so exciting about almost being a teenager. There's also something so embarrassing about that. I was recently reminded of an event from my early pre-teen years. Not a party, or a day in the life. Simply one phone call and how it sparked my imagination. A friend of mine, Molly called me excited and said in barely a whisper,
“Ohmygawd, I just enrolled at the Barbizon modeling school!”
Barbizon!
She wasn't just going to look like a model, she'd be one!
I have to admit I experienced a touch of envy while imagining the highly skilled instructors teaching her how to apply the mysterious makeup that we had recently become infatuated with much to the dismay of our mothers. Every dollar was saved and our strawberry flavored bonne bell lip smackers became obsolete. If we couldn’t afford something we’d steal the testers at Macy’s. In retrospect we are both lucky we didn’t end up with some sort of disfiguring flesh eating skin disease.
But a modeling school? This was something so fabulous and exciting I could hardly stand it. I pictured Molly growing a few more inches just by walking with a book on her head. Barbizon would erase the acne from her face and make her teeth just as straight and white as one could imagine. Maybe she’d even need a bra before the rest of us.
To me at that point a bra was simply a grown up thing you put on to cover the red spots. A step above an undershirt. Well shucks, it still is exactly that to me. But I digress.
Molly would become grown up, enthusiastic and more personable at Barbizon. Ohmygawd, she’d become so popular, rich and famous that she wouldn’t sit with me at lunch anymore. In fact I imagined she’d drop out of Junior High so she could travel to Milan just to stroll down the cat walk. Silly naive me, I thought Barbizon was like Ford Models and that being associated with it could make you beautiful.
Of course now I know Barbizon is mostly a farce and that no one can teach you to be beautiful, that comes from the inside. As for Molly? She’s got perfect posture and developed into a lovely lady, a wife and now a mother. And none of it had a thing to do with Barbizon.
As for me? I’m still trying to figure out how to apply all that makeup I bought, stole and borrowed.
{random act of kindness for the day: moving my car so the parking patrol didn't have to write me a ticket and feel like a dick.}

I never really wanted to be a model or anything i wanted to act or sing but that is about all. Until i got a call from someone that came to my school and asked if i wanted to do a runway. i was soo excited but nervous so i asked someone if they thought i could do it and they said no. THey said my face wasnt symmetrical enough and i had to get my teeth fixed in the front. but i was wondering how do i make my face symmetrical what does that mean???

i just want to look like a modle, i dont live near any modeling schools so i was wondering if you could give me some tips.
Posted by: sarah at October 13, 2003 9:13 AM
hey all, it doesnt matter what SIZE you are. there are just REQUIREMENTS :P. to train for runway you must be at least 5'6 with potential for more growth. to actually DO runway, you must be at least 5'8. tall, yes i know. but for commercial and print modeling, it doesnt really matter what size you are, just as long as you're healthy. as for the cost of modeling schools, i dont know how much barbizon is, but john robert powers is around 1,900 all together, but includes EVERYTHING. i'm just now learning about babarbizon and j. ballard. if you want to know you're full modeling potential, e-mail me and i will send you the names and phone numbers of places you can send your pictures in to. the first step to getting INTO modeling is to ASK AROUND and see what's out there. you have nothing to lose! good luck, all! -lacey clarkson, john robert powers graduate, w.i.s.h. featured model for amazon.com, and gallengher's model of the year 2003. ;) LilCricket90@hotmail.com

hey my name is tahlia and i have all ways wanted to be a model but i dont no how to can you PLEASE help me!!!!! and tell me where to go and what to do??
Posted by: Tahlia at November 24, 2003 5:38 PM
Dont go to Barbizon I went there and figured out it was a scam and a total waste of money.your better off just going to an agency instead. you dont need training if you have wut it takes.
Posted by: Katie at December 3, 2003 7:33 AM
I was enrolled at Barbizon. It got me to L.A to the IMTA. Although unfortunalty I never recieved any jobs, but it did get me to my dream, and Barbizon teaches you a lot, you just haev to be up for it. But Barbizon does cost a lot of money and the amount is not worth it. As you go on in the career you learn from it.. I would say your best bet is to take some photo's with no make-up on, and one with a little glmaour spark in it, and send it to some agencies, and wait and see! If they like you well enough they will train you, and you should nhot have ot pay a fourtine to get in.. Because a real agency makes their money off you, by getting you jobs.

Don't go to Barbizon!!! It costs a fortune and is a big scam!!! Check out this site to read the stories of the barbizon victims http://www.modelnews.com/pages/barbizon.cfm it's so sad how they take the money of girls and crush their dreams!!!

Well, lately I've been talking to this lady at Barbizon, and it seems legit but from what i'm reading it seems like it's a scam. I'm a junior in h.s and this is the most important year and I don't want to waste my money on some school that can't really get me any jobs. I'm 4'11 which is why I want to go into print modeling, I mean I look like i'm a lil girl although im 16. Help me plz before I make a big mistake

Posted by: marlene at December 7, 2003 8:32 AM
Hey, I like this guy named Hogan and i was wondering the only way to get guys nois you is to get pretty and to look like a model thats what guys want anyway isn't it i would say so anyway. Well chow everyone out there!
Posted by: Marlene at December 7, 2003 8:37 AM
BARBIZON IS A SCAM: they are a finishing school, NOT A MODELING AGENCY! Here's some proof:
http://www.modelingscams.org/modelingschools.html
http://www.modelnews.com/pages/barbizon.cfm
http://www.ezbc.com/barbizon.html
Real agencies make money off of the work YOU do for THEM, they DON'T charge $$$$ up front (duh!). I suggest you do research online to find some real agencies and send them your pictures. If any company asks for any money at all THEY'RE A SCAM. Models make lots of $$$$ and the agencies get a percentage, there's no reason why they should charge you up front.
http://www.ezbc.com/
has a lot more info on other modeling scams, even John Robert Powers has a " unsatisfactory business performance " from the BBB:
