Project Runway

I don't know if it is possible to devour a TV show, but if it's possible, that's how I feel when watching Project Runway.

And while I realize most of my commenters are male, maybe I can bring some of the girls out of lurking with this post!

The challenge was to create an outfit for a hip international jet setter, and the designers were their own models. So ostensibly, they should be creating a look that suits themselves and where they would be going, right?

Wrong.

During judging they asked certain contestants "where are you going in this outfit" and in other cases they criticized the designers because they couldn't go anywhere in the world with their creation. WTF?

Both Uli (who is consistent in her lovely style and construction) and scattered Angela were called out for having outfits that were limited in where they could travel and look good. Granted, Angela's crumpled homeless person look implied she might be heading to Vermont to sit in a protest tree and drink organic beer for a month, but I digress.

Uli's dress was lovely, and very well suited for jetting off to the locations she described.

As an example, they didn't bother to point out that Michael's (awesome) swag would look weird outside of the Hamptons, LA or Miami, so why pick on Uli?

After the runway, they dragged contestants off the runway and into the airport. It was a flight to Paris for the final judging. As Ann Althouse points out, it was really cruel -- they forced Laura (who is pregnant) to travel in her 4 inch heels.

In Paris, there were some surprises.

Our crunchy, tree-sitter Angela was auf'd instead of Kayne. Who did some sort of gaudy Liza Minelli/Elton John menswear.

Some of the judges weren't too keen on Vincent's practical choice, but I liked it. He was right, he is the twist!

Would have liked to see Laura win, her dress was the epitome of a jet setter, Michael always creates innovative, beautiful clothes that make me smile but instead it was the thick-tattoo-necked, no chin Jeffrey who won. He designed a rock-star get-up that looks like it is crawling with venereal disease. Especially his cheap crystal-encrusted crotch region. Way to go!!

Anyone else watching and have favorites?

UPDATE: Forgot to link the deliciously honest Tim Gunn's blog, which always makes it work. Except that it often doesn't work, Bravo not only has crappy web hosting, their runway photographers are amateurs, at best.

I always love Laura's clothes, and she cracks me up. She looked so pretty with her hair down on the runway.

I thought Michael's outfit was unnecessarily hip-hop and too young for him, but that's what he likes, so whatever. He can wear a speedo as long as he keeps making those gorgeous women's clothes. I do have to admit, I loved the seersucker cargo pants. Seersucker? Cargo pants? I have a pair of silk brocade Chuck Taylors that I love for the same reason.

Uli looked lovely as always, and Jeffrey's spangled crotch made me want to gouge my eyes out.

And... relurking.

Always good to see you Tanya!

And I agree seersucker cargo pants are brilliant. I've got a pair of satin cargo pants that I love, but they'd travel poorly.

Wonder if the coffee filter dress will ever be adapted for the mass market?! That was something I'd love to wear.

Loved the seersucker cargo pants, and I also loved Uli's dress. There seemed to be no rhyme or reason to the judging this time around. The judge's comments seemed erratic to me. Laura looked wonderful, and if there's any pregnant woman who can fly to France in four inch heels, I'd say it's her. Jeffrey's shiny zipper made me throw up a little bit in my mouth.

I love me some project runway. Have to record it to watch the following morning though. Starts my day off just right. I'm glad Angela is gone, her stuff was too "kitchy" Love your blog Moxie.

I greatly enjoy your blog, yet I'm experiencing a significant amount of self-loathing that I'm driven to post a comment about a t.v. show. I, too, am hooked on the runway, and completely agree with you about last night's episode. I had a soft spot for Angela, but her outfit really did take the cake (as did Kayne's). I'm disappointed Jeffrey won - his outfit was a walking health-hazard. I'm sick of his act (and his chinless, full-throated laugh).

I have been completely hooked since the first show of the first season, and...as is typical with Bravo, as they replay the show a half dozen times throughout the week, I get stuck watching it every time.

WTH is wrong with me?!

Laura is my favorite and I would buy her clothes right now if available. Did you see the price they got for her 'for nuts only' dress? To my recollection, it's the most they've gotten for any item in the show's history. Angela's pants outfit did very well, too.

As for Jeffrey, he's a social misfit. I almost pity him.

And, the judges, nothing p.c. there. They have shown the world as it truly is...unfair. You don't always get what you deserve, sometimes, it's the other guy who ends up with your just deserts.

Of course, I also love 'ANTM'. Great comedy there, folks.

Last 3: Michael, Laura and Uli... Junkie Jeffrey should have been gone long ago, they only keep him because he's so easy to hate... and hate him I do.

Alas, poor vincent. Maybe it's because he's my age, and I know where he is coming from in some ways... Now that he has cast away the silly hats and oversized shades from the first few challenges, his personal style is showing through.

Michael is the annointed... Michale Kors and the super fantastic Nina just love the way michale thinks and performs... It's hard to disagree. I wish Malan had stayed around a bit longer... he would have been at least as compelling as Junkie Jeffrey (have you ever seen such a pathetic parent than the Junky's enabling Mom?)

I'm already looking forward to the next series and we still have 6 to go here!
Kayne will be next Auf'd and I'll be sad to see him go.

Carry on...

Oh god, I LOVED Malan...but that dress was awful. I think had he used any other color, he might have stayed.

Malan Breton from Taiwan. He has a blog you know. Let me see if I can find it.

Yes, here it is!

Malan's Blog!! C'est incroyable....

I thought you may like to know Laura wears sandels when not showing or on camera. I have noticed that she does what women who really apply themselves to their work. Tie or cut your hair and get comfortable. I am too busty to wear her plunging necklines without falling out. A piece of fleshtone fabric would be nice for a little modesty. I think most of the women pulled up the back of their hair. I am a painter/artist and always pull back the hair. She was very pretty with it down but working it would get in the way.

Some of us men watch this show, too. But go for or a "don't ask, don't tell" stance.
