this alone

may be enough reason for me to reconsider my "discomfort" with capital punishment:

" The U.N. has an official stance opposing capital punishment "

Did you notice that the new Secretary General paid for his own lunch!!! How can this be? How long will it last?

Ah, the old "Ifn they're agin' it..." argument.

Well it was very wrong to hand Saddam over to supporters of Sadr very wrong. The violence that comes because of it will be the fault of the Iraqi government. And in turn the US will in fact some of the brunt as they handed Saddam over to the Iraqi's. Even some Nazi's got life in prison. We turned Saddam into a martyr.

Bullshit. He was a martyr in prison or dead. The only way not to have him as a martyr figure was to release him. Is that really what you're proposing?

Yes -- precisely because your solid conservative instincts tell you that pacifism (anti-death penalty is a form of it) is actually a giant, sinister ruse. If there is a devil, pacifism is surely his work.

Well I am generally in favor of capital punishment BUT I have heard that in Illinois 50% of the CP cases got overturned. Maybe if there was like a really high threshold for CP like at least two witnesses, plus DNA evidence on the murder weapon, something like that. Maybe it would make some more sense.
