I used to think...
Not so long ago, I used to think it was perfectly okay to date assholes. Now, I'd rather be 100% single than even casually date someone who registers a 1.0 on the douchbagitude Richter scale.
So I changed my mind over the course of a few years. Now...two questions:
Why do we hold Presidential candidates to different standards than we do ourselves?
And why does anyone even want to run for President -- unless they have the douchebag gene?

well i'm thinking lots of people hold different people to different standards. . . for example, the qualities someone may look for in a day-care teacher would be different from those in a litigation lawyer or a workout buddy or a movie director or a date or a president. . .
and as for why anyone would wanna be a president, i imagine it's a combination of things like lust for power and prestige, the desire to make a positive change in the US and/or the world, the desire for personal gain, and that it might look like a logical step in their career path. . .
the douchebag gene, btw, is an interesting one 'cuz everyone's got it, it's mainly a matter of how much it gets used. . . too little and the person is a spineless boring-ass lame-o, too much and you come across as an asshole. . .
btw, which candidates do you think are gonna get the republican and democrat nominations?. . .

Well - if it is, and ostensibly it is - a good thing for people to live and learn, why do we berate candidates for changes in positions over time?
That's not something that applies only to the left or the right. It applies to both.
No one would go on TV and say, "well Moxie USED to see fit to date scumbag assholes who told her to make herself less important, and now she'll only date nice guys."
My Dad would be an AMAZING President, and he's got the education to back it. But he's too smart to WANT to be in that position. I think people who seek that kind of position are inherently flawed.
As for the nominations....Bloopy, I'm not sure. I think it will be Billary for the Dems and I have no idea for the Republicans. I hope Giuliani. But the Huckster and Romney are ruling at the moment.

my guess is 'cuz the main people who do the berating are the ones who are opposed to the candidates in the first place and use it as a way to demonstrate that said candidate has only flip-flopped to pander to voters and/or special interest groups. . . also, sometimes they might actually be right. . .

I'm just finding all this political bullshit to be a waste of time, I guess.
So I go and write about it. Go figure....

Amen!
Although in my case, the operative term would be "bitches."
I had the opportunity to apply this approach to dating a week ago, and I'm quite pleased with the results. Any woman I date who won't treat me with respect just isn't worth the effort.

Perhaps we pinch an idea from Plato's Republic and coerce those most fit for leadership to serve at gunpoint, since by definition they would never take the job otherwise.
